Screening for Lung Cancer: US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement
Annual low-dose CT for adults aged 50 to 80 who have smoked 20 pack-years and who either still smoke or stopped within the past 15 years, graded B. The 2013 statement it replaces began at 55 and required 30 pack-years, so the change lowers both thresholds and roughly doubles the number of people eligible, with the largest gain among women and Black adults, in whom lung cancer develops after less smoking. Screening stops once 15 years have passed since quitting, or once a health problem limits the willingness or ability to have surgery. The statement rests on two trials, one American and one European, which the register carries below. Both found fewer lung cancer deaths; neither settles what to do with the nodules screening finds, which is the question the ERS is writing its own guideline on.
