British Thoracic Society Guideline for pleural disease
One document in place of the five separate BTS guidelines of 2010, covering the undiagnosed effusion, pleural infection, malignant effusion, pneumothorax and the procedures themselves. Its practical centre is the malignant pleural effusion, where the choice is no longer whether to drain but how: an indwelling pleural catheter that the patient empties at home, or talc pleurodesis that requires an admission. The guideline treats the two as alternatives to be chosen by what the patient wants from the time they have left, rather than ranking one above the other, and the register's trial below is the head-to-head that made that framing possible. Pneumothorax management moves in the same direction, away from a size threshold on a chest radiograph and towards whether the patient is symptomatic and stable.
