Borderline personality disorder: recognition and management (NICE guideline CG78)
CG78 remains current guidance — NICE last reviewed it in July 2024 and left it in place — and its central claim has aged well: borderline personality disorder is treated psychotherapeutically, not pharmacologically. Drug treatment should not be used for the disorder itself or for its individual symptoms, and dialectical behaviour therapy is named for women with recurrent self-harm. The register trials below are grouped by therapeutic school; the two 2009 trials that appeared in December of that year could not have informed a guideline published in January and are listed separately.
This guideline cites 5 of the 62 landmark trials in our Psychiatry & psychotherapy register.
