NICE CG115 Alcohol

Alcohol-use disorders: diagnosis, assessment and management of harmful drinking (high-risk drinking) and alcohol dependence (NICE guideline CG115)

CG115 pairs a psychological core with an adjunctive pharmacological one: after assisted withdrawal, harmful drinking and mild dependence are treated with a psychological intervention focused on alcohol — cognitive behavioural therapy, behavioural therapies or social network and environment-based therapy — and moderate to severe dependence adds acamprosate or oral naltrexone alongside that therapy. The register trials below cover the behavioural evidence base and the combined pharmacological-behavioural comparison.

This guideline cites 2 of the 62 landmark trials in our Psychiatry & psychotherapy register.
